In a randomized, controlled trial, 20 young women consumed tart cherry juice concentrate or a placebo for eight days. On day four, study participants engaged in a rigorous exercise regimen. Marathon runners given tart cherry juice for five days before a race, on race day and for two days after a race experienced significantly faster recovery of isometric strength and muscle function compared with a placebo group.
